What is the Calgary Tower?
The Calgary Tower is a freestanding observation tower that celebrates Canada’s centennial of 1967. This 190.8-meter tower is located downtown in the city of Calgary, Alberta.
The Calgary Tower Timeline
The construction of the Calgary Tower began on February 19, 1967. The construction of this tower was completed in June 1968 and cost a total of $3.5 million. The Calgary Tower, once known as the Husky Tower, was renamed on November 1, 1971, as a tribute to Calgary’s citizens. In 1985, the tower endured a $2.4 million renovation that added a souvenir shop and grill. In 1987, the Western Canadian Gas Company installed a gas-fired cauldron on the top of the tower as an official Olympic flame during the Winter Games.
